A woman identified as Mrs. Vivian Ogechi Nwanebu from Umuoku, Umuazalaukwu in Imo State, has refused to have her daughters circumcised.
The woman said she was leaving her area to prevent some traditionalists from carrying out female genital mutilation on her twin daughters.
According to Vanguard, the woman who spoke Thursday, in Owerri, Nwanebu, said that in the community, children from the age of 10 are due for female genital mutilation.
Her reason for abandoning her home was that her twin daughters have reached the age of circumcision and the life of her children was more important to her.
According to Ogechi, “my community normally circumcises female children from the age of 10 years and above. It is now their turn and they are calling for them and we are running away.
“Our fear is that our twin daughters, Treasure Chidimma and Favour Chiemela Nwanebu, might be harmed health wise and that is why we are working hard to take them away, where their eyes will not see our children.”
