Latest Leak: Huawei P20 Looking Like An iPhone X With Three Cameras
A casemaker in China (a bit of a redunant descriptor, as they're almost all from China anyway) has leaked an image of its upcoming case for the Huawei P20, clearly showing the phone's triple camera and notch. The image was first uncovered by Slash Leaks.
The device shown above is in line with all the rumors we've been hearing of the most premium of the three variants of the P20 series, which will sport three cameras and have an iPhone X-like notch with a series of sensors not unlike Apple's flagship. Notable leaker Evan Blass was first to report on the three camera bit, while popular tech forum XDA first reported of Huawei going with a notch.
Those sensors is rumored to house Huawei's new "Point Cloud Depth Camera," which the company unveiled during the an event for the Honor View 10, and basically does the same thing Apple's "TrueDepth Camera" system: create a 3D map of the user's face for superior facial recognition and an animoji-like feature.
The casemaker, named Lenuo -- I purchased one of the company's case, actually -- also revealed another image that showed off another variant of the P20, this one without a notch and looking more like a traditional Android phone.
This is likely the middle variant of the P20. Another reliable leaker, Roland Quandt, broke the news on January 28 that the series will include three phones named "P20 Plus," "P20," and "P20 Lite." The one with the notch is likely the plus. XDA also reported exclusively that the P20 series will ship with Android 8.1. It appears that Huawei is making an effort to work closely with Google to give users the latest version of Android as early as possible. A bit ironic, considering Google apps are all banned in Huawei's home country.
I broke the news last month that Huawei won't unveil the P20 series at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, instead the company will hold a launch event in Paris on March 27.
U.S. media will likely poke fun at Huawei "copying" Apple here with the notch. That's fair enough. I hope they remember to point out that Apple "copied" Huawei's dual camera bokeh system then, because the P9 did it months before the iPhone 7 Plus.
