2023 Election: INEC Clears Air On ‘Preloaded’ BVAS Which Could Be Used to Rig Election

The Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) is an electronic device designed to read Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) and authenticate voters.

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC said reports of preloaded BVAS circulating on social media is untrue.

Recall that the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) is an electronic device designed to read Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) and authenticate voters.

It requires the voters’ fingerprints, which would help prove that they are eligible to carry out the exercise.

It was alleged on social media about the existence of preloaded BVAS which is intended to rig the presidential and other elections.

But addressing reporters on Thursday ahead of Saturday’s elections, the Chairman of INEC, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, said he does not know about the existence of such a device.

“I don’t know what that means. I’m not sure what that means. The BVAS can’t be operated before the election. It would only start working by 8:30 am on the election day,” he said on Thursday.
