Supreme Court fixes date for judgement on new naira policy

The Supreme Court has scheduled its ruling on the consolidated suit filed by states to overturn the Federal Government’s decision to ban the use of old N200, N500, and N1000 banknotes as valid legal tender for March 3.

After all, the sides agreed on their briefs of arguments, and a seven-person panel of the top court gave the matter the green light to be decided.

You may remember that only three northern states—Kaduna, Kogi, and Zamfara—first went to the Supreme Court to challenge the FG’s decision. However, other states later convinced the panel led by Justice Inyang Okoro to join them as interested parties in the case.

Lagos, Cross River, Ogun, Ekiti, Ondo, Sokoto, Abia, Jigawa, Kano, Rivers, and Katsina, where President Muhammadu Buhari was born and raised, were all added to the suit as parties by the court.

All of the cases that the highest court brought together and heard on Wednesday were marked SC/CV/162/23, SC/CV/162/23, SC/CS/197/23, SC/CV/200/23, SC/CV/210, SC/CV/227, SC/CV/229/23, and SC/CV/222/23.
