How Activist spends 156 in detention as supporters seek peaceful resolution

Supporters of Nigerian activist, Boniface Okonkwo, residing in South Africa, has continued to decry his unlawful detention in Anambra prison since January 3, 2024.

Okonkwo claims his arrest and detention was instigated by Anambra businessman, Sir Emeka Offor over alleged defamation.

According to Okonkwo’s statement, he was arrested at the Area Command in Oraifite, Ekwusigo Local Government Area, while visiting home for the Christmas holidays.

As of today, the activist has spent 156 days in detention, with his case facing multiple delays due to legal issues and the recent NLC strike.

Okonkwo’s case is scheduled to be heard again on June 13 and 20, 2024, at the Nnewi High Court, where he would face charges related to cybercrime.

The case has garnered attention from local communities, with some expressing concerns about the lengthy detention period and the need for a fair trial.

Okonkwo’s supporters have called for a peaceful resolution, and the matter is being closely watched by human rights groups and local organizations.

The State government and legal authorities have not commented on the case, while it remains unclear what evidence exists to support the charges against Okonkwo.

The Nnewi High Court is expected to hear the case on the scheduled dates, and a verdict would be delivered in due course.

The case has raised questions about the role of human rights activists and the need for fair treatment.
