Seven people, including three young children and a teenager, tragically died in a fire early Thursday in Nice, southern France.
Authorities suspect arson as the cause of the blaze. The mayor of Nice revealed images showing hooded individuals pouring petrol in a stairwell before the fire erupted in the Moulins area, near the city’s airport.
Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin confirmed the deaths of the children and assured that police are investigating the incident to uncover the full details.
The fire started on the seventh floor of an apartment block. Nice prosecutor Damien Martinelli stated that an arson investigation has been initiated based on preliminary findings.
Reports indicate that all seven victims belonged to the same family. The deceased children were aged five, seven, and ten, with additional fatalities including a teenager, two women, and a man.
Tragically, two family members attempted to escape through a window; one perished, while the other remains critically injured.
Witnesses, like Iftahou who arrived at the scene during the fire, expressed hopelessness at the unfolding tragedy.
Najim Maecha, representing the Comorian community in southern France, shared that the family had been residing in Nice since approximately 2013.
Mayor Christian Estrosi emphasized the severity of the disaster, noting the toll on human lives and the injuries caused by smoke inhalation among thirty others.
“In light of this potential arson, I’ve requested increased security measures from the interior minister to protect residents from further incidents,” Mayor Estrosi stated solemnly.
