Tinubu to attend AU meeting in Ghana

President Bola Tinubu is set to travel from Abuja to Accra, Ghana, on Saturday, July 20, according to a statement from his spokesperson, Ajuri Ngelale.

Tinubu, serving as the Chairman of the ECOWAS authority of heads of state and government, will participate in the sixth mid-year coordination meeting of the African Union (AU), Regional Economic Communities (RECs), Regional Mechanisms (RMs), and AU member states.

During the meeting, Tinubu will address the progress and challenges of regional integration in Africa, focusing on achievements and issues in West Africa since the last gathering in Nairobi, Kenya, in July 2023.

“The Mid-Year Coordination Meeting, established in 2017, serves as the primary platform for the AU and RECs to synchronize their efforts and advance the continental integration agenda,” the statement explained.

“In his capacity as ECOWAS Chairman, President Tinubu will present the ‘2024 Report on the State of the Community,’ covering peace, regional security, governance, economic integration, humanitarian and social development, energy, mines, and agriculture.”

The agenda in Accra includes assessing early warning and conflict prevention systems within the AU and promoting collaboration among regional economic communities to expedite integration.

The meeting will operate under the AU’s 2024 theme, ‘Educate and Skill Africa for the 21st Century.’

President Tinubu will be accompanied by senior government officials and will return home following the conclusion of the meeting.
