Yul Edochie criticized for discouraging protests against economic hardships
Nigerian actor Yul Edochie faced strong criticism on social media after advising Nigerians not to protest against the country’s economic challenges.
On July 19, 2024, Edochie posted on Instagram, suggesting people should be patient and continue speaking out instead of protesting. He expressed concerns about protests turning violent and causing harm to innocent people and properties, referencing past incidents like End Sars.
“Protest is not the answer,” Edochie wrote. “Let’s be patient. Let’s keep speaking out and doing all we can to help out.”
His remarks sparked backlash from followers who accused him of being out of touch and insensitive to the plight of Nigerians facing hardships. Some criticized him for speaking on matters they felt he didn’t fully understand or relate to.
One commenter said, “Who are you to advise Nigerians? Your post seems motivated by personal interests rather than genuine concern.”
Another sarcastically suggested, “Have you considered comedy?” in response to Edochie’s advice.
Despite the backlash, Yul stood by his statement, emphasizing the need for patience and dialogue rather than protests.
