50 shops washed away by ravaging flood in Ogbaru

 No fewer than 50 shops have been washed away by ravaging flood in Ogbaru main market, in Ogbaru local government area of Anambra State.



The deluge which occurred over a period of time following Sacamori drainage channel running through Upper Iweka- Owerri road bypass and caving in at different portions within the market axis.


Speaking during a visit of House of Assembly members to the area to ascertain level of damage done by flood in the area, President of the market, Chief Ndubuisi Ochiogu said though they had committed some amount of money on palliative work on some portions of the drainage, government needed to come to their rescue to forestall more shops being washed away.



Chairman House Committee on Environment, Chuks Azotani who led other members to the on- the- spot assessment, promised that their findings would be relayed to the general House for a resolution on the findings.


He called on traders to always support the present administration as the governor made effort to address the numerous challenges confronting the people.


Also speaking, Member representing Ogbaru Constituency, Noble Igwe remarked that though the drainage lane is on a federal road, efforts would be made to fix the failed portions to save more structures from collapse .


“If the situation is not checked, it is the traders who are residents of the state that will be affected and demoralized from continuously paying their levies to the government.



The Committee also visited another erosion site threatening St.Valeriain Catholic Church, GRA phase 2. Akpaka, Onitsha.


The erosion had cut off two major roads adjacent the Church premises, pulled down perimeter fence and washed away major parts of the compound.


The Chairman, JDPC, Mr Boniface Okpalanwabude told the Committee that the previous administration did some work at the site but unfortunately it was washed away hence the appeal for urgent government intervention to save lives and property.
