Delta State Marine School Student Drowns, Police Begin Probe

A student of the School of Marine Technology, Burutu in Delta State, who is yet to be identified has reportedly drowned at the Forcados River in the State.


SaharaReporters gathered that the incident occurred Tuesday, while the body was recovered on Wednesday.


Meanwhile, the State Police command spokesperson, Edafe Bright, confirmed the incident to SaharaReporters on Friday, noting that investigation as ongoing.


"Yes the incident is confirmed, we are investigating it," he said.


SaharaReporters had earlier reported that tragedy struck in Zamfara State, Northwest Nigeria, when a boat carrying villagers fleeing a bandit attack capsized, resulting in the deaths of at least nine people.


The incident occurred on Thursday in the Gummi Local Government Area, specifically in Kali village, according to the boat driver, Aliyu Kali. The villagers were attempting to escape the attack when the boat accident occurred.


He had said, "The village was in a panic mode after learning that bandits were underway to raid the area. People trooped to escape to safer locations cross the river.


"The boat sank unfortunately halfway into the river with 50 passengers on board.”


"We yelled for help and about 100 divers came and rescued 40 persons. Unfortunately, nine passengers drowned; and one other in a critical condition at the hospital," he said.
