Trump wins key swing states of Georgia and North Carolina
Donald Trump won the battleground US states of Georgia and North Carolina early on Wednesday, fuelling Republican optimism in a nail-biting race for the White House.
Mr Trump’s projected wins in Georgia, which voted for Joe Biden in 2020, and North Carolina, a state heavily courted by Democrats, leave Kamala Harris with a narrowing path to victory.
Votes were still being counted in the key Midwest battlegrounds of Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin, which the Harris campaign regards as its best remaining hope, and in the western swing states of Nevada and Arizona. Partial results collected by the Associated Press showed Mr Trump leading in all five.
With both candidates scoring wins in their party’s usual strongholds, Mr Trump had 230 electoral votes to 214 for Vice President Harris, with 270 needed for victory.
Ms Harris did not speak at a watch party at Howard University in Washington, where an aide said supporters will hear from her tomorrow. Mr Trump was set to address Republicans in Florida.
