The Imo State Police Command has established a panel to investigate officers who disrupted court proceedings by carrying out an arrest inside the courtroom.
The incident occurred at Orogwe Customary Court in Owerri West LGA of Imo State.
According to Daily Post, it was gathered that the mobile police officers involved in the act are attached to Ogbaku Police Station.
It was further gathered that one of the police officers, Abubakar Mohammed, was apprehended and taken into custody.
Reacting to the development, the Public Relations Officer of the Command, ASP Okoye, disclosed that the situation has been addressed and that is now under control.
He confirmed that the officers involved in the act have been arrested.
Okoye maintained that the Command will not tolerate any unprofessional conduct from its officers.
“They will face trial, and appropriate disciplinary actions will be taken against them.
“The Imo State Police Command remains committed to upholding the rule of law and ensuring that orderliness is maintained at court premises for the effective administration of justice,” he stated.
Meanwhile, a legal practitioner, Sampson Chijioke, has condemned the action of the police officers, accusing them of desecrating the temple of justice.
According to him, the action of the police officers is against the universal judicial system.
Chijioke maintained that the only way an arrest can be effected in the court is through the order of the court which can not be done during proceedings.
Another lawyer, Vitalice Offurum, also condemned the development.
“The manner Chinonso Uba was arrested was the same manner Fabian Ihekweme was arrested.
“Just few days ago officers of the Police Force, from Anti-Narcotics Unit, raided the office of Nigeria Watchdog Newspaper and arrested its deputy editor and other staff, this time around it is now the court,” he said.
The legal practitioner appealed to the state commissioner of police to carry out a comprehensive investigation into the incident.
