Groom Who Was Poisoned By 14-Year-Old Bride Narrates Ordeal, Reflects On Two-Year Relationship

Speaking to newsmen, Haruna expressed shock and disbelief over the incident, stating that he believed their love was genuine.

A 29-year-old groom, Khamis Haruna, who landed in hospital after he consumed poisoned food allegedly prepared by his 14-year-old bride, has spoken up.

He disclosed that they had been in a relationship for two years before their marriage.

Speaking to newsmen, Haruna expressed shock and disbelief over the incident, stating that he believed their love was genuine.

Recall that the food poisoning occurred on Sunday, December 22, 2024, two days after their wedding in Jigawa State.

Recounting the events of the fateful evening, he said the bride’s friends brought a meal of jollof spaghetti to him and his two friends while they were at his tailoring shop.

“We had taken a few spoons when we noticed a harmful substance in the meal’.

“A few minutes later, my friend Alfah began complaining of stomach pains. By the time we got to a friend’s house for help, all of us were feeling unwell.”

He stated that the three of them were rushed to Jahun Hospital, where one of his friends, Muhammad Alfah, tragically died, while himself and the other friend, Isyaku Adamu, survived.

Haruna alleged that his young bride was influenced by an ex-lover who provided her with the poison, instructing her to add it to the food.

“We were married for love,” Haruna said. “She never showed any signs of resentment or worry. I’m really surprised she carried out such an evil act.”

Child marriage in Nigeria has been a conversations of concern. While the Child Rights Act 2003 prohibits marriage for anyone under 18, Jigawa State’s legislature modified the act, removing the prohibition on child marriage.

Lawmakers argued that determining a girl’s maturity age was subjective.

Despite legal restrictions in other states, child marriage remains common, particularly in northern Nigeria.

The cultural and legislative disparities continue to challenge efforts to protect children’s rights.
