Murder of 2: Suspects yet to be prosecuted a year after – Anambra community laments
One year after gruesome murder of two of their sons by suspected members of neighbouring Umueri Community in Anambra East Council Area of Anambra State, youths of Enugwu village in Nsugbe Community have decried inability of government and security agencies to throroughly investigate the matter and bring the culprits to justice.
The youths are demanding justice for the deceased, Prince Chigozie and Chukwura Anyansi allegedly assassinated on November 22, 2023 following land dispute between both communities.
Speaking during a one-year remembrance service for the victims held at the grave site in their compound in Nsugbe,
the Anyansi family, through some of their members, Prince Kenneth Anyansi, Prince Chinedu Anyansi and Miss Onyinye Anyansi accused law enforcement agency of impeding justice.
According to them, they had lost trust in government as nothing had been done to prosecute the suspects for more than one year now.
President General, Nsugbe Development Union (NDU) also expressed concern over the dissatisfactory attitude displayed by the police and the state government in pursuit of justice and called for more impactful measures to yield positive results.
On his part, President, Nsugbe Youth Assembly (NYA) and the ASATU Youth Mayor, Anambra East Local Government, Engr. Chidi Obiudu regretted that the investigation had lingered for so long.
According to him, “November 22nd, 2024 marks a sober anniversary for the people of Nsugbe Town and Enugwu Community as they remember the brutal assassination of two of their brothers and sons, Prince Chigozie Anyansi and Chukwura Anyansi by suspected members of Umueri Community on November 22, 2023.
“Those arrested in connection with the crime are now walking the street freely, thus, undermining the people’s trust in the justice system.
“As the youth leader, I have done my part to appeal to our people not to resort to violence, and of course, Nsugbe is not known for violence.
“But there is a limit to which someone that is hurt can go. And that is why we want the state government to intervene immediately. I trust the Solution administration to come with the solution.
“All we are demanding is for the relevant authorities to expedite investigation and prosecute the suspects to ensure that justice is served and the perpetrators are held accountable for their crime.
“We also demand adequate compensation and support to the family of the victims.”
While reaffirming their resolve to pursue justice until the culprits are brought to book, Obiudu called on well meaning Nigerians to join them in demanding for justice for the Anyansi brothers.
The service featured short prayers for the continued repose of the souls of the victims, exhortation and condolence messages from members of the community.
