Lagos Police Denies Reports Of Woman Using Officers To Detain Her Husband For Taking A Second Wife
Dismissing the report, the spokesperson of the state police command, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, said that Mr. Charles was arrested for domestic violence.
The Lagos State Police Command has dispelled reports that its officials arrested a man on the orders of his wife for taking a second wife.
It was reported that Charles Chiawa had been detained at the Ejigbo Police Station on the orders of his aggrieved wife, Uche Chiawa, for allegedly taking a second wife.
The report stated that Charles and Uche have been married for 20 years, but trouble started when Charles reportedly had a child with another woman eight years ago.
Charles maintained that he had the right to take another wife since his marriage to Uche was conducted under traditional customs. However, Uche argues that their union was not only a traditional marriage but was also registered as a court marriage, giving her legal grounds to take action against her husband.
"I also did court, not only traditional marriage. I used the police to arrest him because he always beats me," Uche said
A source familiar with the issue told the publication that;
"Charles was detained at the Ejigbo police station by his first wife on the allegation that he married another wife. I was told the first wife has connections with the woman DPO at Ejigbo, and she wants her husband to suffer inside the cell."
According to the source, efforts were made to secure Charles' release, but Uche reportedly blocked every attempt.
Dismissing the report, the spokesperson of the state police command, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, said that Mr. Charles was arrested for domestic violence.
''The suspect, Charles Chiawa, aged 35, was arrested for domestic violence. While within the station premises, he threatened his wife that he would kill her, to the hearing of the DPO and other officers.
He was, therefore, detained and transferred this morning to the Gender Unit of the Lagos State Police Command for a detailed investigation and prosecution.
The Lagos State Police Command would not condone any form or shape of domestic and s3xu@l violence.''
