The Anambra Police Commissioner, CP John Bassey Abang has ordered full scale investigation into the circumstances that led to the brutal murder of a 31-year old lady, Mrs Rita Onyemauchechukwu Atansi (nee Onyebuchi).
A statement by the command’s spokesman and public relations officer(PPRO), Haruna Mohammed disclosed that the Central Police Station (CPS), Awka was alerted in a distress call at about 8.30am on Thursday, March 26,2020 of an offensive odour oozing out from a residential apartment belonging to one Ikechukwu Atansi at Amawbia in Awka South Council of the state.
The odour, according to the statement attracted hordes of flies all around the room when police patrol team led by the DPO Central Police Station Awka, CSP Chucks Nwoke rushed to the scene.
The detectives, the PPRO who issued a statement late night Friday noted, pointed out that the dead body of Mrs Atansi which was lying in the room was soaked in blood that had caked.
“After careful analysis of the scene by police detectives, marks of violence was observed on the body of the victim and blood spilled all over the room.
“Consequently, photographs of the victim as well as the scene were taken and corpse removed and deposited at Amaku General hospital mortuary for autopsy after it was confirmed dead by a medical doctor.
The police statement noted also that, “surprisingly however, the deceased’s husband, one Mr Ikechukwu Atansi, ‘m’, aged 49 years, of Umudum village in Isuanochia was right inside the room with the deceased when the door was opened and could not give a satisfactory account of what actually transpired.
“Instead, he claimed that he was injected with a substance by unknown persons who according to him must have killed his wife…”
He was subsequently arrested and has been assisting the Police with useful information to unravel the circumstances surrounding the incident, Haruna stated.
However in a tearful petition, titled A Sorrowful Cry For Help” the family of the deceased led by her brother Johnpaul Onyebuchi, from Achalla village, Enugu-Agidi town, Njikoka L.G, Anambra State sought for justice for his late sister.
She disclosed that Rita, who until her mysterious painful and brutal demise was 2-months pregnant, did her traditional and marriage rites on 10th January 2020.
That she married Mr Ikechukwu popularly called “Agbada” from Isu Aniocha village in Awka north LGA in Anambra State.
“My sister and I were staff of Philip Smith Security Limited in Awka. And she failed to report work on Tuesday 24/3/2020 which was unusual as it never happened before. She was always at work and was very well known as a dedicated staff of the company.
Following her absence at work on Tuesday I put a call to her on her phone but it was ringing and she wasn’t answering her phone calls.
She never responded to those calls and never returned the calls which is unusual.
I continued calling her even when I closed from work but still ringing no response. After work hours I went to her house where she is living with the husband at Chima’s compound in Ezimezi village, Amawbia.
On reaching there I saw that the house was locked and the husband’s car was not in the compound, after several knocks and banging at the door without response I decided to go but left message requesting for her husband’s phone number. When I got the number I called the husband but it was switched off.
He disclosed that worrisome situation remained the same the next day (Wednesday, March 25, 2020)
So I informed my mom who said she had been calling her too but no response and that it was same also with Rita’s husband’s phone was switched off.
On Thursday 26/3/2020 I decided to stop by their house before going to work. On reaching the compound I saw police men in the compound and a crowd gathered.
When the special crime unit of the police arrived i was taken to the room to find the dead body of my sister lying in pool of blood . And the body had started to decompose. The whole place was smelling and blood all over the bedroom.
I was shocked and couldn’t tell my mom at that point who also came to know why her daughter wasn’t answering her calls. Mama was suffering high blood pressure, that is why I couldn’t tell her then and pleaded that people should take her away from the place.
My sister was 2 month pregnant as I was writing this story. Please I want the human right activist and lawyers to come into this matter and make sure that the suspect is brought to book to face the law.
“The suspect is the husband Ikechukwu by name popularly known as Agbada from Isuaniocha. He lives with his wife Rita Onyebuchi in Ezimezi village, Amawbia.
He appealed for justice and the help of human rights lawyers to assist the family to pursue the matter legally and appropriately.
