The Federal Government under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is considering banning workers from using single-use plastic in all ministries, departments, and agencies.
This is coming days after the Lagos State government announced the ban on the usage and distribution of plastics across the state.
The Minister of State for Environment, Dr. Iziaq Salako who disclosed this at the Ogun State Environmental Protection Agency’s Second Chemical Handler and Users workshop on Tuesday, stated that the ministry will be seeking approval from the Federal Executive Council (FEC) to ban the use of the plastics in the government offices.
The minister, who commending the state government for the initiative, highlighted some of the measures being taken to promote circular economy which include strengthening relevant policies and institutional framework, building the capacity of manufacturers and producers to embrace the principle of cleaner production and enforcement of national policies on chemical management.
The minister seized the occasion to reiterate the commitment of the Federal Government to the elimination of single-used plastics as he implored government department and offices to comply with the new directive.
